And yes, I previously dragged ancient Egypt into this, because this is true in every aspect of my life. I need several thousand years of cultural precedent to justify enjoying myself. That’s what happens when you give a critical thinker an internet connection. Can’t simply have a nice afternoon. Must establish a historical framework for liking a little guy.

I’ve already made the argument that we’re following ancient traditions here. Humans gather together. Humans adore cats. Now what? Put those two activities on a phone, and I’m supposed to feel embarrassed about my screen time?? Please. I’m maintaining the village. Somebody has to keep the ceremonial “oh my, look at him” going. People should thank me for my service!

The pawticularly lovely part, which I’ve also gone on about before, is that cat parenting barely has any relation to it. I mean, I obviously love my cat the most, but I love your cat. My neighbor’s cat. Your neighbor’s cat, who I have never met and am nevertheless rooting for. A cat could have an entire second family of devoted admirers without knowing any of us exist. Frankly, excellent boundaries. I could learn something.

We’ve covered how quickly that affection turns into a community, too. I even brought Netflix into the discussion, which was quite a detour for an article whose main contribution to public life is “here, more cats,” and I stand by the enthusiasm

Because underneath all my elaborate explanations is the mildly inconvenient fact that I like people more when we’re doing this. There. Said it. Somebody alert whoever handles my professional reputation.

Usually, being an internet culture editor means opening social media and developing an opinion I’ll need a walk to recover from. Here I get to enjoy strangers enjoying something. Nobody needs me to identify the sinister implications of a comment section full of affection.
I’m writing about how much I enjoy people posting about how much they enjoy cats; I can put the little detective hat down. It’s leaving a mark.

But I wandered back into meta territory, so I'll leave it at that except this time I’m too comfortable to interrogate it.
I’ve spent weeks trying to explain why this makes me happy, as though happiness needs an itemized receipt before accounting will approve it. At this point I’m submitting the expense under “cat” and letting them chase me.
There’s probably a sensible limit to how emotionally invested I should be in animals whose names I only know through a username. I’ll work out where that is after I check on everybody.
